Major report will be published in February

The date for the publication of the Campaign’s report on the importance of social science in the UK has been set. It will be launched on 24 February by Greg Clark MP, the Minister for Universities, Science and Cities, at an event in Westminster. The event will include a panel discussion with experts from business, academia and the third sector. More details will be given on our website later. Read the Report
The report, entitled, The Business of People: The Significance of Social Science Over the Next Decade, will spell out the vital role social science has in helping our society to meet the important challenges it faces.
The 30-page document will present a picture of Britain in the immediate future and set out how social science can help guide government in key policy areas. These include the economy, demographic change and migration to and from the UK.
Its recommendations are intended to appeal to politicians and policymakers in Westminster, Whitehall and in the devolved administrations, as well as funding councils, think-tanks, higher education and businesses.
The Campaign recently held its fifth and final working group meeting before its pre-election report goes to print. Guest speaker Paul Boyle FAcSS, former Chief Executive of the ESRC, presented the feedback of eight independent reviewers on a draft of the report.
The working group then fine-tuned a set of recommendations for the size and nature of investment that UK social science needs so that it can realise fully its potential for helping economic growth and social innovation.
Over the coming weeks Campaign staff will edit the latest draft into a definitive manuscript. It will then be published in print by SAGE and on the Campaign’s website in open access format.
The report will be toured around universities across the UK. It will form the backbone of the Campaign’s lobbying activities – and a valuable tool for social scientists’ lobbying more widely – in the run up to the next government Spending Review.
