BIS blueprint heightens fears for research funding

A leaked consultation on the future of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills suggests that November’s spending review will be accompanied by a radical overhaul of the research funding system, Professor James Wilsdon, Chair of the Campaign for Social Science, writes in the Guardian.
Concerns highlighted by Professor Wilsdon include the future of quality-related (QR) funding, the possibility of a metrics-based replacement for the REF, and public investment in research falling to just 0.49% of GDP. He calls for the research community to come together and make strong arguments to protect the future of the UK research system.
