|Creative methods in higher education research
SRHE Methodology Workshop
Jennifer Leigh (University of Kent)
Lou Harvey (University of Leeds)
Nicole Brown (University College London)
Jessica Bradley (University of Leeds)
You will gain hands-on experiences of using material objects and metaphor, and have time to think about how and why you might approach research in this way, and the kinds of considerations you will need to bear in mind. You will also have the opportunity to discuss ideas you might have or possibilities for incorporating creative research approaches into your own work.
To prepare for this session please bring with you an object or photograph that represents something about your work or identity as an HE researcher.
We intend to expand this into a series of workshops examining other creative approaches to research, such as drama, narrative, visual, movement and film-based methods, and sessions addressing the implications of these approaches for research ethics, dissemination, engagement and impact.
10:30 Arrive and welcome
11:00 Presentations exemplifying how the organisers have used different creative approaches in their research (drama; objects as representations and metaphors; visual arts collage)
11.45 Practical workshop demonstrating a specific method, using objects
1.30 Workshop debrief and discussion
2.15 Participants discuss their own research and ideas for using creative methods
3:15 Plenary discussion – Q&A, future workshop ideas, evaluation
