SRHE Methodology Workshop

Jennifer Leigh (University of Kent)

Lou Harvey (University of Leeds)

Nicole Brown (University College London)

Jessica Bradley (University of Leeds)
Educational research continues to rely on traditional research methods from the social sciences, such as interviews, surveys, questionnaires and focus groups despite being fundamentally a multi-disciplinary field. For this seminar/workshop hybrid we have come together as four HE researchers who use different creative approaches in our work to introduce why and how they might be useful, and to allow participants to experience and discuss the implications. Our own work uses what might be broadly termed ‘creative’ methods, drawing on the visual and performing arts, embodied perspectives, the use of material objects and metaphor, and narrative and poetic approaches.

You will gain hands-on experiences of using material objects and metaphor, and have time to think about how and why you might approach research in this way, and the kinds of considerations you will need to bear in mind. You will also have the opportunity to discuss ideas you might have or possibilities for incorporating creative research approaches into your own work.

To prepare for this session please bring with you an object or photograph that represents something about your work or identity as an HE researcher.

We intend to expand this into a series of workshops examining other creative approaches to research, such as drama, narrative, visual, movement and film-based methods, and sessions addressing the implications of these approaches for research ethics, dissemination, engagement and impact.
